Music is Banned

The evolution of society reached a brilliant turning point when humanity banned music. It was such a simple solution to so many problems that it became a mystery as to why it hadn’t been done sooner. One had to struggle to remember that when the various tunes, melodies and rhythms that evoked powerful emotions were all around us, it seemed like it was a good thing. “Crush the soul.” said the great architect of this policy, Jeremiah Harding. The audience before him rippling with applause. Laughter bubbling up amongst it. He smiled at them all. “It sounds so brutal, and it is at first. But is it anti-human? Is it anti-love? Let’s not be so sure. Consider money. Sometimes referred to as the root of all evil. It’s hardly romantic. But it has been the driving force of progress in human civilisation for thousands of years. Humans are smart creatures. To capitalise on that, we must be conscious of how we organise ourselves. Let us do away with this so-called soul. Let us discover the person, the actual person, who they are and how they act, when not drenched in the hot, viscous oil of song. When people can see each other without the intoxicated blur of melody. Are we afraid that they won’t still be beautiful?” ...
